From the naming convention, I assumed the 5420 was newer but it seems that the 3450 is faster according to: http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html

Can someone explain this to me?

It's difficult to tell what is being asked here. This question is ambiguous, vague, incomplete, overly broad, or rhetorical and cannot be reasonably answered in its current form. See the FAQ for guidance on how to improve it.

Newer does not mean faster. Higher model numbers do not mean newer.

Also, the PassMark CPU rating parallelizes perfectly. Real world problems often don't. So CPUs with more cores and hyper-threading tend not to perform quite as well as the ratings suggest.
