I'm looking for a setup that can output to 12 40" displays, with a possibility to increase that number to 24 in the future. At the moment we are using 3 machines to output web stats to 12 monitors (different window on each screen, nothing spans multiple monitors) but we're looking to upgrade and run all the monitors off a single PC.

We were looking at purchasing multiple ATI 5870's, but it seems that they aren't being made anymore and there doesn't seem to be a similarly priced/spec'd card out. The cards don't need to be highend, they just need to have to be able to handle multiple outputs. The motherboard we currently have is an ASRock Z68 Extreme7 Gen3 which has 5 PCI-e slots..

What do you guys think? What would you go with?

There isn't a strict budget, but aiming at around $500 per card would be ideal.

Have you considered multiple External USB adapters? I run 4 Diamond BVU195 HD USB Display Adapters with no problem. Each can have it's own rotation, resolution, etc. Get a 10 port usb hub and run with it.

How about DisplayLink USB display ports? You can connect plenty of these and the costs starts at $50. http://www.displaylink.com/shop/index.php?product=5 They do not do video well, but should be great for stats.
