I have a 1.5tb NTFS storage hard drive (1TB data), it was accidently formatted fat32 bootable, the format utility only ran for a few seconds before the drive was disconnected.

Using Test disc from UBCD and have run the following actions

run TestDisk

select the hard disk and the partition type

choose Advanced

select the partition

choose Type

enter the value corresponding to the previous (file system NTFS type 7 chosen)

choose Boot

choose RebuildBS

List

When I use list it does not show the files only 2 files both

dr-xr-xr-x 0 0 0 Date

Undelete says, Can't Open file system. File system Seems damaged

Can test disc recover this volume or do I need to use a Data recovery program like GetDataBack? There are all types of files on this drive.

I have not used the write action on the disk.

After much reading and tests the MFT and MFTmirr are gone, so TestDisk cannot recover the NTFS partition or data.

I will have to use another data recovery solution such as GetDataBack NTFS

"If both MFT and MFTMirr are damaged and thus cannot be repaired using TestDisk, you might want to try commercial software like GetDataBack"

There are many programs that do this, I've only ever used Recuva. This will search the whole disk and display everything it finds. You can then restore the files.

Didn't really answer my question, yes I know of all the recovery programs – Moab Jan 14 at 22:19
You could still try, maybe it spots something. – Simon Verbeke Jan 14 at 22:23
