I am learning all the backup world now, I am trying to figure out how does the Media Set idea works in BackupExec 2010, and its relation to the Data it backs up.

From what I understand:

  • A Media set is a group/family of Media (tapes/disk) that are assigned a specific Append/Overwrite periods.
  • I can create any type of Job = and assign it to a Media Set
  • I can NOT assign a Tape to a new Media set until the overwrite date is over.

The backup needs:

  • I have a disk of 1.5 GB I want to backup.
  • I want to have 1 copy of that data offsite, with 1 month of backup only.

What I think I need to do:

  • Create a Media Set called: Overwrite - 30 days
  • Create a job that will do a full backup every 30 days (e.g. on the 1st)

And this brings me to the question:

  • Is a Media Set attached to a Backup Job?
  • How many tapes do I need to assign to the Media Set? (All tapes are LT4 - 1.6GB)
  • How exactly does the tape manages the tapes?
  • Are ALL the tapes that will backup the same data in the same Media Set?

I tried to read on the Symantec site, with no success. I would love the 101 Backup for Dummies if available.

Making it clear in the question what software you're using would help quite a bit. – freiheit Jan 16 at 17:46
