am setting up a PC with Windows 7 for a kid (5 years). It is his first PC so he will be messing with it a lot. In the past I used software such as GoBack (Roxio and Norton) to restore the system to a predefined restore point on every reboot, today I stumbled on:

  • Deep Freeze
  • Norton Ghost (I am not sure it restores on reboot).
  • Rollback RX (While the list of featurs states so, I couldn't find this on the installed software options).
  • Acronis True Image (I think this does a backup but doesn't restore on reboot)

Do you have any recommendations regarding restore-on-reboot software?

Could it be possible to set him up with VirtualBox or similar for 'tinkering'? – skub Jan 16 at 0:17
skub, its a PC dedicated for him that he needs to turn on and off without help, VirtualBox would be over the top. – Adam Jan 16 at 7:34

We use to use Deepfreeze with over 800 pc's and it worked great. For what you are talking about I would highly suggest this product as it does a restore on reboot without any slowdown on boot. You can also schedule thaw periods were it can be allowed to make edits for things like windows updates to be applied.

I would caution that each time the system is booted it is rolled back, unless it is thawed which essentially turns the product off, this means windows updates, antivirus, new software, all will be erased and will need to be installed, including user files and settings. If you need to retain Files for the user look in to setting up thaws paces and you should be ready to go.

DeepFeeze is exactly what I'm looking for with no more features than what I require. – Adam Jan 18 at 11:22
