I have a Lenovo Thinkpad w510 and it is claimed to be an Ubuntu compatible laptop.
I use Ubuntu 10.10 on it.
I have been using it for almost a year and have met a lot of issues which dramatically worsen the whole user experience with this laptop.
Recently I thought about switching to Mac to get rid of the issues, but before I do I would like to find out if there is a "Fully Linux compatible laptop" which does not have such a long list of problems.
Here are the issues that I face regularly:
- it happens: kernel panic (random CAPS Lock blinking) after a few minutes in a locked screen mode (drives you crazy when you have keyboard layout switch mapped to CAPS Lock);
- second monitor: sometimes the second monitor is found by the system, sometimes not; anyway you should always reboot to at least to try to get the second screen working;
- unusable Search Tracker: the tracker icon can randomly disappear, the search works 50% of time - sometimes it does not find the files you are sure you have on the indexed disk;
- TrackPoint middle button scrolling turns off after the laptop resumes from hibernate/suspend;
- unstable wifi: sometimes the laptop can not connect to a wifi access point which serves a couple of other computers (it works) and which has been used an hour ago;
- unstable hibernate - the laptop can randomly freeze when going into hibernate mode;
- sound: every time I need a mic (Skype, etc.) I have to unmute the mic in the system settings;
- unstable CD-ROM: the DVD drive can dissappear from the system, if I insert a UDF disk from my video camera;
- unstable USB: sometimes a usb thumbdrive is mounted, sometimes not; sometimes it is mounted as read-only, sometimes not; sometimes the write to USB disk fails.
So, the question is: Does a fully Linux compatible laptop exist?
