Question

I would like share the printer from a server without the need to install the driver software on all of the clients. But if i just share it via the standard print sharing feature of OSX and connect to it from a client, the client asks to install a driver or is only able to use it in a very generic mode.

How can i set up single purpose queues as a workaround?

.

Longer Description

I have a big networed workgroup printer (Canon iR C2380i) with several feeders for different paper types (A4 recycled, A4 normal, A3 ... ). In order to make use of this features under OSX you need to install some drivers from Canon. I have my OSX Server setup to use this printer and all of it's features.

However when i share this printer the clients again ask me to install a driver, or they can only use very primitive generic features, but can't use for example different paper slots.

So i think i need something like different queues set up on the OSX Server for example: A4-Queue-grey A4-Queue-colour A3-Queue-grey A3-Queue-colour ...

and than somehow match those onto the working setup of the printer on the Server. But i am a bit lost on how to achieve that. Of course the whole thing works with CUPS, do if somebody knows howto do this in CUPS on any system please explain, too.

Cheers, Stephan
