I'm planning to move from an apartment into a house later this year. Given all the tricky steps involved in the move, I am thinking that perhaps some software could be helpful at various stages of the move:

  • while packing: what's in this moving box?
  • while moving: which boxes need to be moved first?
  • while unpacking: what box contains item XYZ?

What software could help me manage my moving boxes?

Perhaps one could pre-print barcode labels or just sequence numbers, and then while packing somehow capture what goes into the box I happen to hold right now, so that the information is quickly searchable later.

Bonus points for solutions that don't require an Internet connection, and even better if an iPhone application exists... that would literally be very handy.

Note: The article linked above does include one iPhone app which appears to be rather poor, and has not been maintained since Sep.2010. Perhaps a better alternative exists?

smartphone apps would be your best bet , but i feel you are over thinking the issue. paper/pen +wife should be enough for you – Shakehar Jan 24 at 10:51
I'm moving country in a few weeks. We've tried spreadsheets, project planners, and everything... Now we just use a pen and a few bits of paper. It really is better. Maybe you could keep the files on the pc for easier editing, and just print a final copy before the move – Sirex Jan 24 at 11:39
I agree that I probably am overcomplicating things, but after 16+ moves I thought there could be a smarter way. Maybe not :-) – Torben Gundtofte-Bruun Jan 24 at 18:08

Oh, I see that I neglected to say I don't use Mac. Gotta be for Windows or iPhone. Sorry. – Torben Gundtofte-Bruun Jan 24 at 18:09
My bad. I thought that was an iPhone app! – Moif Murphy Jan 25 at 10:14
