On the road I'm using smartphone-tethering to connect my Windows 7 Notebook to internet. Mobile connection speed is decreased from 3G to ISDN after distinct data volume, so you have to keep an eye on it. Unfortunately, I recognized that some programs like google chrome update on their own forcing big data downloads, although not my main browser and not started for weeks, another story.

I'm searching for a efficient way to check, which programs cause unwanted secret data transfer and limit my mobile connection speed this way. I'm thinking of file manager or a network transfer logger, showing me folders sorted by increased size in the last week/month, so I can switch off update in settings/options of these programs. Or a network logger listing the processes causing the most data transer?

Firewall may be another option to solve my problem, but I have too much programs installed to check here every single one and periodically switch off. Also some adobe air don't seem to have a udpate turn-off option at all. I'm more interested which software actually causes a lot traffic by sending "home" like Windows does or pretty big updates of google chrome & co.
