I’m using a Windows Vista PC on an Asus P5VD2-VM motherboard (Via P4M900/VT8237A chipset).

I’m using a Cisco WUSB54GC WiFi adapter (really made by Ralink). I use the latest driver.

When I download too much, the network card overheats, disconnecting me from network. The USB port also „hangs” — even when I disconnect the network card, Windows still thinks it is connected.

When I later shutdown the computer, it crashes with BUGCODE_USB_DRIVER after Windows shutting down. This only started to happen recently. Is it the motherboard or the network card?

Your only solution is to replace the card. If the card is failing when there is a great deal of network activity not much you can do about it besides using a better card. – Ramhound Jan 30 at 16:51
@Ramhound I tried to replace it with a PCI card, unfortunately it had terrible reception. – kinokijuf Jan 30 at 16:54

The wifi adapter was fubar. I replaced it with a PCI card and an antenna with a long cable.
