I've got FIOS installed. I also have POTS with Verizon. The installer said I could get an RJ-11 to RJ-45 adapter and use my home phone on any drop.

Just tried it and no dialtone.

Did I miss something? Can I really use my POTS through my Verizon router? How can I use my phone through my RJ-45s?

Either the installer used the wrong language or he was on something. First, what are the "drops" that you have? Do you plug computers into them to get network connectivity? If you do, there is no way a simple adapter will work, you need a VOIP device of some kind. MagicJack comes to mind. – Paperlantern Jan 30 at 19:22
Drops are just wall plates with the rj45 going to the router. Thing is, I don't have VOIP. I guess the installer thought I did, even though I told him I had a regular phone line. Isn't magicjack for VOIP only? Is there any way I can do it with another adapter? – eych Jan 30 at 20:09

You can if you find the other end of one of the drops and hook it into your regular POTS service, the Cat5/6 should carry the analog signal no problem. We hook analog lines up to regular drops here in the office for fax machines all the time. But that drop doesnt get punched to the regular patch panel, it gets hooked to the 66 block and regular old POTS service from telco is activated on it, thats all. So if you splice the DROP ITSELF to POTS, yes you can then use that drop as a phone jack as long as its wired right. But as it sits, there would be no way other than VOIP. – Paperlantern Jan 30 at 20:23
