An hourglass flashes constantly as I type. When it's on, the keyboard accepts no input resulting in lots of typos. This does not occur in any other program. What's going on and how do I fix it?

It sounds like an unwanted macro to me. Unfortunately, I don't have time to elaborate. – Hand-E-Food Feb 1 at 5:52

Is it possible that it could be saving recovery files - that can cause this effect. You could try disabling it or changing the frequency with which it saves (Bubble > Word Options > Save). Auto-recovery saves can be particularly slow when saving to a network location.

Try starting in safe Mode to see if it is an addin or something else.

Select Run from the Windows Start menu

Type winword.exe /a (you must insert the space before the /a; also, you may need to type the entire file path or use the Browse button to locate the file)

See if there is any change. If there is, then you may have an addin that needs to be disabled or modified

This MS help articles describes the process
