we have a windows 2008 x64 system which is continually using all memory. Looking at the process running I can see that none are consuming any more than they should be, nor trough analysing process dumps have I been able to detect any memory leak in the suspect application. Yet we are still seeing 20GB used more than expected.

Looking at performance counters I can see that the "modified page list bytes" counter is extremely high (about 20GB).

From research I can see that the counter is "Modified Page List Bytes is the amount of physical memory, in bytes, that is assigned to the modified page list. This memory contains cached data and code that is not actively in use by processes, the system and the system cache. This memory needs to be written out before it will be available for allocation to a process or for system use"

However could someone please explain to me what this actually means ?
