My D-Link DIR 300 apparently does not detect any phone line or data. My phone line gets cut off the moment I connect the line cable to it. Does this mean that it is broken or just needs a firmware or whatever updates?

Your question got a bit mangled. Your phone line gets cut off when you do what? The DIR-300 does not have a built-in modem, you can't connect it to a DSL line without one. – David Schwartz Feb 4 at 9:36
