We got a large TV from somebody for free because the external tuner/DVD/VHS box died. After no luck trying to fix it, we threw it away. It attached to the box with a standard DVI cable, so the screen currently acts as a giant 1920x1080 monitor, and nothing more.

I'm able to plug a computer into it using a DVI cable and it will run it fine, but it will not accept analogue via DVI (for example plugging a computer in via DVI > VGA > DVI to lose the digital signal). When plugged in with an analogue signal, it just shows the same white screen as it does when it's not plugged in at all. This means that it must take the pure digital signal in a DVI cable.

It gets more confusing, though. I believe it has to do with progressive and interlaced scan. My HD 6950 graphics card is able to run the screen, and so is a crappy mac laptop (both using standard DVI ports). Computers output progressive scan, so I believe that the screen will not accept interlaced.

We have tried several boxes to run it. The first one gave random distorted signals (possibly faulty box? Or was it giving out an interlace signal?) to this screen, but worked on another screen. After returning that box, we bought another one which simply did not run the screen at all (same white as not plugged in) but also ran other screens fine. That box did not give out 1920x1080 in the specs or options, but also did not seem to put out either a digital signal or a progressive scan, so the big screen did not notice it. I have done more searching for a box, but had no luck.

Down to the question, I need an external TV tuner box (no HTPC) to run it, but it must output true digital DVI with progressive scan at 1920 x 1080. Another option is a series of converters or adapters that will make it work. What I'm trying to get is beyond my knowledge to find, so it would be awesome if you could recommend some things.

Thank you!

How old is the TV? And what other connections are on the TV. I'm not positive, but what I suspect is you are running into problems because of HDCP. The TV is looking for an HDCP handshake to accept a signal over the DVI port, but when you are sending an analog signal that is converted to DVI, the HDCP handshake does not occur and the TV does not display. – psubsee2003 Feb 5 at 1:53
The TV is from 2004. It's model number is LC-45GX6U. I have never heard of HDCP or a HDCP handshake... I suppose that's what tells the computer that its name is "SHARP 45LCD"? I would guess that you are right about that idea. So any idea how to get an external TV tuner to work? Thanks! – Keavon Feb 5 at 2:40

HDCP is a copy protection scheme intended to combat video piracy. A side effect is that it creates problems and inconvenience for millions of law-abiding citizens. – RedGrittyBrick Feb 5 at 10:38
HDCP is a high dentition DRM scheme. It was designed to keep people from stealing HD content by connecting digital inputs (particularly HDMI) to unapproved recording devices. IT basically requires a handshake between both devices indicating that they are approved devices. It has a unfortunate side effect of making life extremely difficult, especially when you are trying to convert and/or split signals. I'm not sure that is exactly what is going on with you, but I've seen similar situations (white screen, distorted picture) when the handshake is not happening. – psubsee2003 Feb 5 at 10:40
@RedGrittyBrick funny timing coincidental choice of words :-) – psubsee2003 Feb 5 at 10:43
