Super User is a question and answer site for computer enthusiasts and power users. It's 100% free, no registration required.

With the new Privacy changes to Gmail I feel like it's time to jump ship and change my email provider. The question is, where should I go? As silly as it is, I have been using Gmail for about 8 years now... It was extremely convienent, and I was hoping that it would be my last email address.

So, what's a good alternative to gmail? I was thinking yahoo, but I wouldn't doubt if they went the same route some day.

You're concerned with privacy and want to go with Yahoo? If privacy is an issue, you may want to go with a personal server, or maybe with a paid account. Most free accounts are going to have a lot of privacy concerns. – Viper_Sb Feb 10 '12 at 17:51
@Viper_Sb I don't want to go with yahoo, It's what I was considering.. :) I don't know, that's why I am asking... :) – jsmith Feb 10 '12 at 17:53
Some ISP's have lifetime email addresses. You could consider them? – Matt H Feb 10 '12 at 17:58
For the moderator that closed it. If it's off topic, what stackexchange site should I ask it on? I'm ok if it's off topic, just not sure where to go. :) – jsmith Feb 10 '12 at 17:59

@jsmith, it was not a moderator that closed the question but the community at large. Your question has no "real" answer as there are any number of alternatives to Gmail, some or many of which may suit you and thus making it a bit of a shooting gallery to see who "wins" the accept. As per the faq: "You should only ask practical, answerable questions based on actual problems that you face. Chatty, open-ended questions diminish the usefulness of our site and push other questions off the front page" Your question is far too open ended. – Mokubai Feb 10 '12 at 18:04

http://www.seznam.cz/ uses an interface very similar to the one of gmail. You will likely have to translate the page when you sign up, since it's in a foreign language.

GMail is also in a foreign language for most of the people on this planet ;) – ldigas Feb 10 '12 at 18:02

Ninthfloor may (or may not) be what you are looking for. You get email and shell access; the email account can be used with IMAP. If you're the type of person who is in love with the command line, you might like this then. It's been around since 2009, but is only run by a few people and funded by donations, so it might not have the sense of permanence you want.
