Total commander is an awsome tool, but I'm looking for something freeware.

I've tried muCommander, and I just don't like it. Are there any other good similiar programs, preferably freeware?

There is FreeCommander. But I always come back to Total Commander, I'm too used to it...

I know. Servant Salamander was not too bad either but it's not freeware anymore for quite some time (the old version 1.52 still is). – Snark Sep 10 '09 at 11:50

Far Manager is a program for managing files and archives in Windows operating systems. Far Manager works in text mode and provides a simple and intuitive interface for performing most of the necessary actions:

* viewing files and directories;
* editing, copying and renaming files;
* and many other actions.

i really like FAR, and not only for nostalgic reasons, it is a really powerful filemanager

JCommander (Java Commander) is a next generation file manager targeted to be powerful and flexible. Being multi-platform and distributed under an open-source license, it is freely usable on virtually any platform and operating system.

Double Commander, a relatively new kid on the block, is showing some potential (cross-platform, rip the installer with Universal Extractor if you like 'em portable)

Two-Dirs is another free and feature-packed alternative to Total Commander, a portable version is available.

P.S. like the other clones mentioned here, they are by no means a match for the Big Daddy. Total Commander may not be free but certainly worth every single penny.

MuCommander. From the site:

I find it hard to justify "lightweight" when I installed it and starts up using 60+ MB. – kizzx2 Apr 6 '11 at 12:42

Ultra Explorer may also be an alternative. From the website:

The user interface is completely customizable. You can hide or show as many of the featured windows, dock them in other places or let them float as free standing windows. The same is true for the tool bars as well. You can even move buttons from toolbars to other toolbars and assign your own short cuts keys.

It is a very interesting explorer-alternative and has a huge amount of features. I think it is worth a try.
