I'm looking for some official confirmation of what hardware is inside the new iPod Touches, specifically, the CPU, GPU and memory.

ArsTechnica says it's the same as the iPhone 3GS on the 32 and 64 GB models, but I have yet to see that confirmed anywhere more official (i.e. from Apple). Earlier today, Wikipedia showed it having the older GPU, but now shows it with the newer GPU.

Of course, either one of those could be wrong. Does anyone have a more official source that states the specs? Maybe someone's torn one apart? :)

How does this relate to programming? – Zach Johnson Sep 11 '09 at 0:10
Based on their profile, I imagine they want to know so that they can program for it more effectively. – Warren Pena Sep 11 '09 at 0:14
@Zach Johson: are you really asking how hardware relates to software programming? In order to target the platform, you have to know what's available, especially if you are doing programming with the GPU (e.g. shaders) – Shaggy Frog Sep 11 '09 at 0:24

Apple doesn't usually publish the specs of its phones or iPods. You'll probably need to wait for a teardown to really know for sure what's inside.

Edit: These guys usually tear down new Apple products pretty soon after they're released. They posted a teardown of the iPod Nano 5th Gen already. Watch that site, and they'll probably have one of the new Touch sooner rather than later.

They've just added a teardown at ifixit.com/Teardown/iPod-touch-3rd-Generation/1158/1 -- but they didn't specifically identify the GPU component (although they allude to it at the beginning of the article) – Shaggy Frog Sep 11 '09 at 21:15

With apple, it simply goes like this:

If it has not been officially announced by apple through their news release channels, then everything you read is simply rumors and speculation, rarely complete fact.

You will know within a week of official release what it is packing exactly as the tech enthusiest sites rip them apart. Until then, read everything as speculation and guessing.
