I have disabled the service for the player but why is it enabled in the first place and how do I get rid of it? (Do not want to play media sharing at work)

You could try this:

You just need to open up the 'Media and sharing centre' (click the network icon on the notification area). Then choose the 'Choose homegroup and sharing options'. You can then select which media (if any) you wish to share

This answer was a part of a thread about disabling media sharing on the Windows SevenForums site.

I have no home groups and it seems like no sharing is enabled in the media and sharing center – noesgard Sep 11 '09 at 8:55
Have you tried looking through the thread? I've noticed that others had the same problem. Someone managed to turn media sharing off by simply turning Homegroup on and off. – alex Sep 11 '09 at 9:16
can't turn homegoups on/of as I'm on a domain (as far as I could see in the dialog) – noesgard Sep 11 '09 at 9:36
