In Outlook, the date/time shows up like so:

Tue 3/13/2012 5:53 PM

Such as for "Date Received".

On various other programs/systems, they allow you to set the date/time display to be relative like this:

3 minutes ago

(For example if the time was 5:53 PM compared to above, thus 3 minutes ago)

Other examples:

1 hour, 4 minutes ago


Yesterday, 3:20 PM

Or if it's not a recent date, it typically shows up like normal:

2/13/2012 5:53 PM

I believe Thunderbird has an "Age in days" feature.
