In VLC Player (v1.01), how do I zoom video and control aspect ratio with fine control, as is possible with Media Player Classic Home Cinema (MPCHC)? The standard zoom appears to only support double, normal, quarter size etc, not useful to me at all.

An example:

I play an older music video file that is in 4:3 aspect ratio. In MPCHC I can use the number pad to zoom in small increments until I have removed the left and right letterbox bars and the video fills the whole screen. I can also stretch and move the video in small increments until I am happy with the aspect ratio and position.

I could continue using MPCHC, but I have two displays and really like VLC feature enabling full-screen video on the main screen and the VLC interface (menus etc) on the second. I have not found a way to do this on MPCHC, if anyone knows I'd also be interested to hear.

I don't think you can fine-tune them during playback, but when you start vlc via the command line you can specify an exact zoom and aspect-ratio to use, like:

vlc --zoom 0.25 --aspect 4:3 foo.mpg

or:

vlc --zoom 0.333 --aspect 5:3 foo.mpg

etc

Maybe this will help: Video Magnification/Zoom In & Out

Another intriguing feature is Video Magnification. Under Geometry tab, enable Magnification/Zoom option, to let it zoom in/out the video. You will see a small window at top left corner with main magnification control. Fill in the triangle by clicking it to zoom into the video. To view the desired video portion, move the square capturing screen across the box.

This is the solution that worked best for me, as I had a video stream I had to play in VLC (RTMP is poorly supported in my preferred media player, MPCHC) with both vertical and horizontal letterboxes ad wanted to zoom it, then i realized the thing.

Just use the crop function: if you leave default aspect ratio options the video will scale to fit the window, thus giving the zooming effect!

To access cropping you need to open this menu or use the CTRL+E shortcut:

the menu to open

Then navigate the tabs in this way, and then play with the values to achieve the desired zoom level.

opened menu

And yes, you can fine-tune it - even during play - as you have pixel-level control.

VLC Player - Interactive zoom / Magnify.
Do this -

First go to VLC installation directory and then execute this command :

vlc --video-filter "magnify" "path/to/video"
