On Windows you can use Windows Live Writer, which is excellent. Is there something similar for the Mac (preferably free)?

This was actually a duplicate of the exact same question, with similar wording. Since the original was never answered and the user hasn't logged in for a while, I have merged the duplicate with this one. – Diago Sep 13 '09 at 22:12

If you use Firefox there is a nice add on called Scribefire, it is,

a full-featured blog editor that integrates with your browser and lets you easily post to your blog. You can drag and drop formatted text from pages you are browsing, take notes, upload images, and post to multiple blogs.

A list of supported services it here

And yes its free :)

Indeed not as close as Windows Live Writer, but MarsEdit comes pretty close.

Another one which seems good (by reading some reviews, no personal experience) is ecto.

+1 recommendation for MarsEdit – Chealion Aug 18 '09 at 22:56

Not free but I highly recommend ecto. It is the closest to Live Writer I could find and I paid for a license. They also have iBlog which is a iPhone blogging client. When I can't use Live Writer I use Ecto.

Alternatively use Parrallels and run LiveWriter in a VM. You can also use Fusion or VirtualBox if you want alternatives and can't live without LiveWriter.

ecto is neat! – Jason S Aug 19 '09 at 1:42

They’re not free, but MarsEdit and ecto seem to be the most popular blogging tools for Mac OS X.

ecto is the most complete solution in my opinion ;)

You should also take a look at Blogo. I'm a big fan of the rich text editing and the image upload.

Not free, but Blogo looks good. It does have a free trial period.

This is not exactly free, but if you're willing to sign up for a http://macdeveloper.net/ account, you can search for the beta of QuickPost, which in my opinion is the best of all of these. At the moment it only does Blogger, but Wordpress and others have been "coming soon" for a while now.

Kind of surprised no one mentioned TextMate which is fabulous for a lot of reasons but it's also what I've always used for composing and posting blog articles. It uses XML-RPC to push your local file to your site, so it should work with WordPress, Drupal, Moveable Type, etc.

TextMate works for posting to blogs, but its blogging support feels a bit hacked-up, if only because it's implemented through a bundle and not built-in. MarsEdit and ecto are designed for blogging from the ground up. – Lawrence Velázquez Dec 13 '09 at 16:19
