I know the question has been asked before in a more general way Best image viewers for windows and i agree with the answers. But Irfanview and others have something important lacking: pre-fetching of the next slideshow image in memory. Did I miss this option in Irfanview?

it is very annoying with todays 4-5 Megs hi-res images to have to wait about 1 second until the next image in a slideshow is loaded. esp. when viewing them directly from slow CF cards, it can take 5+ seconds.

What image viewer has this feature?

I've noticed Picasa has image prefetching when viewing photos. I think it does the same thing for slideshows as well.

Image 'preloading' has been a feature in ACDSee for ages (Irfan, XnView and Faststone still don't have it). IIRC, the last free version was 2.4.x, which is still available at oldversions.com

if you're using ACDSee 2.4, run your Slideshow, go to Options and check the box Delay flip until next image is fully decoded.

tip: use Universal Extractor to make it the program portable.

You might want to try Xnview. It tries to prefetch the next Image and I'm pretty sure it does that in Slideshows too.
