What Open Source Software Tools, preferably Desktop for Windows could I use to plan My Projects?

I use tiddlyWiki. It's very powerful and portable. Works off your browser. Has a slight learning curve but it's very powerful.

There's a pretty complete list of project management software on Wikipedia; it might help you decide what's best for you. Here's the open-source desktop-based free project management apps I was able to find on that list: OpenProj, Open Workbench and GanttProject. If you want alternatives to these apps, you can look over the complete list.

I find FreeMind, a mind-mapping software, very useful in just about anything that needs planning. And yes, I've used it for planning projects.

openProj and WorkBench are worth checking out. Open project allows to open existing .MPP (MS Project Plan) files and work with them as .xml files. Whereas WorkBench does not allows to do so.
