Possible Duplicate:
Looking for a good free image editor

Photoshop is much too professional to use.

Any other to recommend?

Strangely enough a question already asked here. Free is actually irrelevant since you only have about 3 commercial options, and Adobe owns two of them. – Diago Sep 14 '09 at 11:40

I often use The Gimp -- a couple of advantages are :

  • it's the same software I can use on both Windows and Linux
  • it's quite powerfull -- more that needed, for me, actually
  • it's free (open source)
  • it's free (costs no money)

Still, its a bit intimidating for someone who hasn't used it before, lots of buttons, etc. Still, a nice program. +1 – D'Arvit Sep 14 '09 at 9:45
I agree with your "a bit intimidating" -- I'm still intimidated ^^ But, for people who crack photoshop, it would often be the perfect choice : not more complex, and free -- and legal ^^ – Pascal MARTIN Sep 14 '09 at 11:27

Why is Photoshop too professional to use? It's simple, fast (nowadays), relatively stable and VERY powerful. Every serious IT profressional should be able to peddle Photoshop with at least some sufficiency, because in image editing terms, it is head and shoulders ahead of the rest.

I suggest you read some tutorials, because it's really quite a logical, simple piece of software.

Gimp for quick and simple image editing; Photoshop for client work when slicing out a layout for use in a website, not just for initial creation but since almost every designer primarily uses it, it's the de-facto standard.

If you're looking for a freeware, I'd suggest PhotoFiltre. Too bad its development has slown down since they now focus on the commercial PhotoFiltre Studio, which is great but not free of course.

My preferred commercial image editing software is Corel (formerly Jasc) Paint Shop Pro. Maybe because I'm using it for more than 10 years now.

Adobe (Photoshop) Lightroom 2. Much cheaper than Photoshop, easier to learn and quicker for everyday use. On top of all, it's non-destructive, meaning all the changes you make do not affect the Image until you export it. Since Lightroom 2 is out, I rarely use Photoshop any more.
