I can't update my system. Does anyone know what the problem is?

Congratulations, you seem to be the only person with this problem on the whole internet. Seriously though: Have you tried rebooting, doing it over the GUI, etc? –  slhck Apr 7 '12 at 20:15

There is a chance that the Software Update cache or plist are corrupted, try to delete them. If there is a problem with the cache, it doesn't matter if you do software update via CLI or GUI. Alternatively, try to download and install the updates manually from here: support.apple.com/downloads. Or, it could be something else -- I remember that there was an update for Software Installer recently, but that was for Snow Leopard, not Lion. –  lupincho Apr 8 '12 at 13:12
