What applications out there (besides the built-in ones and the feature demos) take advantage of new Windows 7 features (the new tricks with the taskbar and start menu)

I don't mean existing programs that use the standard recent file list (which Windows 7 makes into Jump Lists); I mean applications which actively use the new features.

This should be a community wiki - Unless someone lists every single application in a single answer, there is no valid answer for this. – Diago Sep 15 '09 at 7:18
Agree on making this a community wiki. – Nick Josevski Sep 15 '09 at 7:46

Not sure if this is a Windows 7 feature or not, but I've noticed that when burning a disc in ImgBurn, the entire taskbar button turns into a progress bar. VERY cool for monitoring burn progress.

It's a new feature of Windows 7, which a few programs use now. Total Commander for instance, in the last version 7.50, does that too when copying or moving files. – Snark Sep 15 '09 at 6:02
Yeah, it's a Windows 7 feature, but it also has to be enabled by the app. – alex Sep 15 '09 at 6:15
Also happens in Windows functions, such as copying files, etc. Very cool feature. – th3dude Oct 15 '09 at 14:36
Since posting this, I have actually implemented this in a professional application...very cool. – NickAldwin Jun 29 '10 at 18:59
I wrote a blog post on how to use the windows 7 taskbar features in WPF applications. Check it out here if you're interested. – roviuser Oct 31 '11 at 13:43

Chromium now supports jumplists (most visited sites, recently closed tabs, etc).

iTunes 9 has tasks in its Jump List and has playback controls in its preview (like Windows Media Player 12)

Safari makes use of the preview system for each open tab, just like IE8 does.

So does FireFox. – mrdenny Sep 15 '09 at 4:02
Firefox does? I'm using 5.3.5 and not seeing it. – JamesGecko Sep 15 '09 at 6:05
Firefox? I've never seen it do it... – alex Sep 15 '09 at 6:14
Firefox doesn't. Firefox only displays windows, but not tabs, the way that IE8 or other MS apps do. – Robert Koritnik Sep 15 '09 at 7:17

Firefox as of version 3.5.3 only shows the active tab per window, whereas Safari and IE8 show all open tabs. Chrome 2.0.172 has the same behaviour as Firefox. – Nick Josevski Sep 15 '09 at 7:44

Firefox has integration with Windows 7 if you use Winfox:

  • Frequent Items support
  • Tasks support
  • Pin support
  • Auto-detection of the Firefox directory and user profile
  • FavIcon support (downloads top fifteen favicons to your Firefox Cache directory)
  • Launch Firefox by clicking on the Winfox icon
  • Linking of all open Firefox windows – Sets all Firefox windows to use Winfox (only if Winfox is running)
  • Taskbar progress overlay when downloading files
  • Number of open tabs illustrated using a taskbar icon overlay
  • Multiple Firefox profile support

Gmail Notifier Plus was written specifically for Windows 7 / Windows Server 2008 R2. A really nice application that I became used to in a matter of a day. You'll be even more glad when you have multiple Gmail accounts.

What is it capable of:

  • jumplists - it displays a list of unread messages that you can click and they'll open up in your preferred browser
  • peek - this one's tricky because this application doesn't have any visual window. Instead of a window, peek feature displays unread messages of each account you add to the app. It displays one email at a time (truncated of course) with buttons to flip through...
  • superbar icon notifications - superbar (ex taskbar) icon also displays a nice visual number of unread messages you have in all registered email accounts

Windows Live Messenger replaced the trayicon with the jumplist.
