does anybody know a good an actively developed alterantive to the keystroke-launcher Launchy or Executor? Launchy seems no longer to be under development. Executor also seems not to be developed activly and still stucks on 32-bit, so its not very usefull on Windows 7 x64.

Are you doing anything special besides launching apps? I personally switched to just using the built in windows key and just typing. There's also brandontools.com/content/StartPlusPlus.aspx – Kvad Apr 18 '12 at 2:39

Find and Run Robot (aka FARR) is actively developed, searches the live filesystem quickly, has a portable version, a bunch of configuration options and supports plugins and aliases. It requires a free registration and donations are requested but not mandated. It's one of the first apps I install on a new machine.

Executor is still being developed and a 64 bit version is available.

The current 32 bit version runs fine under Windows 7/8 64bit and has no restrictions or issues with 64bit apps that I have seen.

I use AutoHotkey, which works fine on both 32 and 64 bit.

Also:

  • it supports scripting, so you can do some pretty advanced stuff, if needed
  • it has a good documentation
  • key binding works very well (I managed to bind even the media keys in combination with CTRL, ALT and/or SHIFT)

AutoHotkey is pretty nice for writing scripts to automate tasks. But i think its not right tool to replace a application launcher like Launchy. – Alexander Apr 17 '12 at 8:39

Ont of the types of tasks you can automate with it is launching an application. That's what I do with Autohotkey 99% of the time and that's a great productivity booster. For the few times I need a lancher aplication, I use the Windows 7 start menu (press the Win key and start typing the app name) – w0lf Apr 17 '12 at 8:46
