I am going on a trip abroad, where data roaming is insanely costly - so I want to disable cellular data on the IPhone and only rely on WiFi.

I googled it and results seem to indicate it is nescessary to fake an APN profile - but that seems insane, if that is the best way to do it.

Is there a better way than creating a fake, broken APN profile?

The phone is a 3GS and OS is currently 3.0.

Go to Settings > General > Network > Data Roaming.

Turn the "Data Roaming" option to "Off". there you have it.

This does not prevent calls being recieved – Sam Sep 17 '09 at 15:26
@Sam Cogan: OP just wants to disable data, not calls. – caliban Sep 17 '09 at 15:56
@Sam Cogan: For disabling data and calls - use the airplane mode. – caliban Sep 17 '09 at 15:57

I believe that on the latest version, if you go to flight mode, you can turn WiFi on without disabling the flight mode.

If this doesn't work, try going in to phone settings and disabling edge / 3g / data roaming.

That would disable cellular radio and hence prevent calls as well, right ? – Sathya Sep 16 '09 at 12:02
