I'm looking to build a 12TB home server with 6x2TB disks. I've heard a lot of negative stuff about "green" drives, so what exactly should I be looking for? What specs matter for RAID drives if I want to not have drives failing all the time?

You should do some preliminary reading first as your math does not work out... 6X2 will not equal 12 in a RAID 5 your looking at about 10 TB with RAID 5 and those 6 disks. – Kyle May 14 '12 at 18:08
Fault tolerant hard drives designed for RAID are expensive, green drives are a poor choice, I would suggest Western Digital black series hard drives if you cannot afford the RE versions of WD drives – Moab May 14 '12 at 18:08
Green drives "shut down" to conserve power. You might not want this to happen. Do some more research. – Ramhound May 14 '12 at 18:09
