I am trying to back up my laptop to an external hard drive. I select Back up your computer under Control Panel/System & Security. A window opens up called Back up and restore your files which tells me that Windows Backup has not been set up. So, I select Set up backup and a new windows opens: C:\Windows\system32

According to a Microsoft instruction video on the net I should get another window. What's going wrong and/or what other ways are there to back up my laptop?

Did you check if you’re able to setup backup from the notification area of the taskbar? And also is it just the backup utility that opens up system32 folder or any other applications on your computer also does that? –  ahmed May 15 '12 at 11:55

If the system32 folder is opening up, a registry setting relating to Windows Explorer is broken. Scan your machine for malware. Try logging in as another user and running through the same steps. If the problem goes away as this user, the first account's registry may be corrupt. –  user3463 May 16 '12 at 7:50
