I just got my zune HD and I'm trying to save it from the fate suffered by my 30 gig. It dropped and hit the ground on its headphone jack, which broke some of the solder joints on the board.

I'm looking for an ultra-low profile headphone jack adapter. Something that would stick out a mm or so and ether take a sharp turn and end in a female jack or transition to wire. Something that would make it much less likely a glancing blow will damage the jack.

Any ideas?

You can use a Flexible Headphone Adapter Jack like the one offered here.

I'm sure if you're looking for something that is not advertised for the iPhone, you'll probably get it for half the price!

Replug doesn't take a sharp turn, but its response to a glancing blow is designed to minimize damage to all the devices involved.

If the cord were short enough to unplug as the Zune fell (uh!) it would protect the Zune without this Replug. – nik Sep 17 '09 at 13:58

Well, if you were really serious about it...

http://www.instructables.com/id/SO2N2BIFW39JJOE/ slice off or bend the ground connector 90 degrees, wire up all three as per normal - Protect it somehow- connect the wires to a female jack plug to plug in normal headphones to.

And... i really should patent this idea ;p

Some points that might help.

  1. Avoid letting the Zune fall!
  2. Keep a short cord which might rip out as the Zune falls
  3. Consider keeping it unplugged when not in use -- be prepared for a fall!

quite pessimistic I agree, but while you do not have a good solution, this might help.
This is one reason to have Bluetooth A2DP capabilities in the Zune...
Maybe, they'll get some case design (like a variation of Jam Jacket here) that protects the audio jack.
