I've had good luck with wordpress.com for hosting my blog, but I'm beginning to want something a little bit more flexible. No javascript, a limited selection of themes, etc. Are there any similar sites that give me a bit more flexibility without me having to go out and get the hosting and maintain it myself?

I'd even be willing to pay (a little bit) for it.

Why not pay for WordPress? – Daniel A. White Jul 16 '09 at 1:04

If you're willing to pay (a little bit) for it, then just host your own Wordpress install. It's worth the investment to have a completely customizable blog.

You're talking about $100 a year including domain name. That's worth it.

When it comes to CMS, it doesn't get much easier than installing wordpress.

Most hosting providers even provide a '1-Click Install' to automatically setup your Wordpress back-end. – Charlls Jul 16 '09 at 1:06

Squarespace is becoming a really popular option. But that all depends on what you mean by "flexibility." They've got a very impressive tour-video.

Textpattern - A flexible, elegant and easy-to-use content management system. It is both free and open source.

That doesn't meet the "without me having to go out and get the hosting and maintain it myself" part of the question though, unless there are hosted versions? – tjrobinson Jul 17 '09 at 15:23
