Office programs are very slow -- like five minutes -- when I'm away from the University network unless I use the VPN to link to the network. How can I decouple the program from the network?

Sounds like a network issue instead of an Application issue. If it works fine over VPN but not over any other network... I think you answer the question. And the only way to have the Office software decouple off the network is having a local VPN client that will put a layer on your stack IP. So you'll feel the same way you're in the office but remotely. Check with your Network/Sys admin. – r0ca May 29 '12 at 12:59
