I read that placing your router in STA + AP mode is the best way to repeat your wireless and build a home mesh network, if your hardware support this mode.

Anyhow STA + AP is not specified in 802.11, so not all wireless chips support it, unlike WDS which is partially inserted in 802.11 standard.

I heard that WDS halves your available bandwidth when you use your router as a repeater, unlike STA + AP mode. Is this true?

Can someone help me better understand the difference between STA + AP mode and WDS, in mesh networks?
