In windows XP, (added-it looks a bit like) I can't print from notepad, but I can from ms word. Why is this, what can I do to solve it?

UPDATE- turns out I can print from notepad, if there is text in the document, but when there's no text in notepad, I can't print. (Really it should print a page with untitled written at the top, but the paper doesn't even get sucked into the printer when I click print for a blank notepad window).

As a test prior to noticing it did print in MS Word, I saw the printer does indeed come up in device manager when i plug it in. And I did install the drivers for it beforehand.

An annoyance about it not printing a notepad document with no contents in the file, is somebody unaware of the issue might think the printer doesn't respond to anything. As it's so unexpected to most people, to be able to print in ms word and not notepad. Many may just try notepad, it fails, and they can suspect it's a driver issue or not even getting as far as that.

The answer to the problem, is that notepad for some odd reason, and i've no idea why as in most of my experiences it doesn't behave like this. And this could be notepad, or could be the printer, it could be windows, I don't know. It doesn't even suck the paper in. I guess it may be specific to this printer I don't know.

When there's nothing in the notepad document. It doesn't suck the paper in and print untitled on the top(as i've seen on most systems i've set up, and they've got sp2 on them).

Normally i'd think machines just print a page that says "Untitled" at the top. But this won't do that. If I open the print spooler, I see the document goes there then disappears. I have seen this once before years ago. I have now solved it somewhat.

If you type a single character, then it prints. So something, I don't know what, but something, is deciding that if a notepad document has no characters in it, don't print it!

That's different to the normal behaviour is it should print a page with untitled at the top(when you do file print in an unsaved blank notepad window).

But as of now.. I see, the solution being that it does print from notepad, if you type at least a single character into notepad, then it prints. Though that still doesn't explain why it doesn't print when there are no characters in there. What is making that decision. I wonder if anybody else has experienced this / has any input on it

@Ramhound Try reading past the first , 2 sentence paragraph. Like, second paragraph onwards. –  barlop Jun 15 '12 at 11:35

the answer, if you read it past the first 2 sentence paragraph, is that you can print from notepad, but in this case, not when it's blank. Why one cannot print when it's blank, @Ramhound most probably doesn't know, and neither do I. –  barlop Jun 27 '12 at 19:49
