I know how to write queries, but haven't had to mess with the software before.

I've been given a username, password, and an Oracle TNS string (the text, not a tnsnames.ora file).

Nothing I've tried so far has worked. I've tried downloading SQL*Plus and the Instant Client from Oracle's website, but can't get anything to mesh and connect.

Is there a simple software solution out there that lets me connect and query the database? Preferably something that would allow me to either copy and paste results, or save them to a file?

You have a host name, a port and a DB name given? Then you can use EZCONNECT – Philip Jun 22 '12 at 19:01
Can you try Oracle's SQL Developer? – Jun 22 '12 at 22:56
as recommends, use SQL Developer, its free and do not need oracle client. It uses java thin client. – scriptmonster Jun 26 '12 at 17:21
