i will have a cd or dvd left inside my laptop, and it will be fine most of the time. occasionally, however, the drive just starts up on its own but does absolutely nothing. sort of like a car spinning it's tires, it's going nowhere. this happens when in system standby (inactivity) as well, so i'll come back and the drive is making noises, but it's not sounding quite right. i'm worried that this will eventually either damage a disc or the drive itself.

is there any kind of program that could cause this random auto-read type of behavior that I can disable? i'm kinda at a loss here.

I assume taking the disk out is out of the question? – imtheman Jul 7 '12 at 19:44
it's a laptop and it travels with me from place to place. i usually keep a movie or a game in there as a practicality. – bleachorange Jul 8 '12 at 2:03
