How would one go about downloading a file from the command line using Bash but not Wget or Curl?

This is not Bash, but does work in an environment without wget or curl

lynx -source > index.html

This works with telnet instead of lynx:

(echo 'GET /'; echo; sleep 1; ) | telnet 80
