Perhaps XP is wrong and should be hacked to look like Ubuntu (Gnome?)? As an aside, in XP/Win95 I've always moved the task bar/start menu to the top of the screen. Perhaps you just need to re-learn using your computer. The two systems share a lot of UI ideas, it's only the rarely used system tweeking that is really different, usually requiring command line tools in Ubuntu. I have recently delved into Ubuntu - I have a Gnome desktop and a KDE desktop and they aren't hard to use on a day-to-day basis. – Skizz Sep 22 '09 at 12:23

See this article : "HOWTO Make Ubuntu Look Like Windows Vista".
See also this discussion.

Linux distributions that imitate Windows are either commercial, such as Xandros/Linspire, or have a very temporary life-time.

Conclusion: You can make Ubuntu look very superficially like Vista, but you can't make it into Vista.

I think you have the wrong approach here. Making Ubuntu look like windows won't make it any simpler. What are you having problems with? There are TONS of resources out there, I think it would be helpful if you spent some time to learn the operating system. Knowledge is power, the more you know, the better.
