The thumbnails are there but when I click and select preview so I can edit the pictures they won't open.

What file formats are you trying to preview? Is this happening to all pictures or just a specific folder or file type? –  techturtle Jul 19 '12 at 16:09
Does double clicking them show you the image? Have you tried installing an image editor such as Paint.Net? –  Mokubai Jul 19 '12 at 21:44

If you are using windows live essentials try this.

Try to go START / default programs / set your default programs / and pick "windows photo gallery" and "set this program as default"

if that doesn't work do the same thing, but select a different photo program than windows photo gallery.
