The question title is misleading. It seems like you actually want to grab attention with it, not provide concise information about your question. – alex Sep 23 '09 at 15:22

Project Management

I've (briefly) used GanttProject and OpenProj. GanttProject is (not surprisingly) focused mostly on Gantt charts, while OpenProj is a little more feature filled. I don't believe I've tried OpenWorkbench (but I know I've taken a look at the site before), it looks like it might work as well.

Depending on what you want to do, would OpenOffice Draw work as a Visio replacement? Perhaps Inkscape?

Dia is an excellent alternative to Visio. And hey, it looks like they finally have a Windows build, though I don't know how well maintained it is.

I've recommended Dia to a friend who needed to draw diagrams, and she was quite satisfied with it. She had reasonable computer experience, but was no tech, and she used the Windows build. So apparently the Windows build is usable for regular users. – sleske Jan 12 '10 at 11:55

Freemind is a good alternative to Visio if you are doing simple flow-charting / thought mapping.

I do a lot of my diagramming in Visual Paradigm which has a community version that is free (not sure if you're using visio at work or not). It's very functional, very intuitive and is a really clean UI.

As for project, I don't know any good alternatives, as I don't use it.

I use http://my.origramy.com/index.html as a free online alternative to Visio in terms of diagram building, web page prototyping and mind-mapping.
