I have a bitlocked removable drive with 2 partitions. One partition has stopped automatically opening. I right mouse click and select Unlock drive but i only get a screen that allows me to enter the recovery key or a usb stick. The recovery key i have was diligently backed up and the serials match etc but the key doesn't work.

So i want to try just entering the password which i know but the wizard with that option doesn't appear. How do i force the bitlocker to let me enter the password instead of the recovery key. All i get is the following:

Does your machine have a TPM? Did you upgrade the BIOS recently? (Some problem history would help a lot. My bet is your password is tied to the TPM.) – David Schwartz Aug 15 '12 at 7:59
No, no TPM. No h/w changes or BIOS updates. I used to be able to just enter the password. i.e. on occasion i would swap out the external drive and enter a password when i reconnected it. But it has been attached for months and suddenly just wont allow any access nor any ability to enter password. – rism Aug 17 '12 at 7:40
