I'm sure there's demand for the simplicity of .snapshot-style recovery in Windows (of arbitrary directories, not just the registry). Is there any free software that does this? Or even paid? How about for Mac OS X?

For those of us who know Windows tools but not necessarily Linux ones, what exactly is .snapshot? It looks like a hidden folder, not a backup utility. Also, what version of Windows are you using? – Daniel H Aug 17 '12 at 21:53
I consider myself to be pretty familiar with Linux, and AFAIK, there is no built-in application that creates this folder. What are you using to create this? Are you looking for something like VSS/Timemachine? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadow_Copy en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_Machine_(Mac_OS) – Zoredache Aug 18 '12 at 0:28
Yes, I'd like Time-Machine like disaster recovery that will work on file systems other than Apple's. – Sridhar-Sarnobat Aug 27 '12 at 21:22
