Super User is a question and answer site for computer enthusiasts and power users. It's 100% free, no registration required.

The StackExchange chat engine seems to be rather nice. Are there desktop chat clients that implements similar chat?

Required features:

  • Linux and Windows support;
  • Offline message delivery;
  • Showing notifications in tray (so web-based solutions probably won't work);
  • Multi-user chat;
  • Some privacy (to discuss work questions) - somewhere around the Skype's level.

Wanted features:

  • Editing messages, revision history;
  • Putting short links;
  • For󠀠matting, code blocks;
  • File transfer with NAT traversal;
  • Inserting pictures (with automatic thumbnailing);
  • Being XMPP-based (so can use simple text-mode clients in basic mode).

Just using chat.stackexchange.com probably fails "Some privacy" and "Showing notifications".

Websites can show notifications just like chat.se does; it's a Chrome-only feature so far, though. –  grawity Aug 19 '12 at 14:40
Sounds like a software/shopping recommendation to me, which are considered off-topic. –  Ƭᴇcʜιᴇ007 Aug 19 '12 at 18:43
"Shopping"? I'm not going to buy anything, I hope to find something FOSS. "software recommendation" - seems to be on-topic. –  Vi. Aug 19 '12 at 23:50
Did you find something in the end? –  iono Mar 20 '13 at 9:16
No, I started my own Qt-based "chatdown" (chat + markdown). It's too little implemented yet to show anybody anything... Are you interestred in development? –  Vi. Mar 20 '13 at 11:16
