For years and years I've used an old program called Archive Creator for making CD and DVD backups of our work. Typically when we make these back-up sets there are around 50 DVDs generated. What was great about Archive Creator was that it allowed you to designate a volume name and it would also append a number series to the end. So each time we made these backups we would just set the next number.

The volume name might be 'Files_', the starting archive number might be 68, and the number digits might be three. You would then point Archive Creator at the directory to archive and it would work out how many DVDs need to be created and then burn each one with the formatted name.

Eg. The first DVD would have the title 'Files_068', the next 'Files_069' and so on for as many DVDs that were required.

It also didn't compress the files - which is important for us.

The reason this naming of the volumes was important is that we then had database software that would read all the DVDs and allow us to make a full catalogue so bringing files back from archive was a very simple process.

The trouble is that the software is so old it doesn't play nicely with Windows 7. I was hoping to find a replacement.

In summary, the software must:

  • Disk-span from a directory to be archived
  • Not compress the files
  • Automatically name and number the DVD volumes

I hope someone can help with this one.
