I'm searching for a backup solution for a WHS 2011 itself. Because I want to mainly use the network shares a secondary backup would be needed. I come up with the following solutions:

  • NAS (e.g. Synology DiskStation DS412+)
  • external hard drive (e.g. Drobo S or Drobo 5D)
  • secondary PC (best & cheapest solution, but connectivity is slow due to LAN)
  • streamer (e.g. Tandberg LTO-Ultrium 5 HH Drive)

The next important point is the software. I have some experiences with Allways Sync but it requires too much CPU power and writes additional files on the disk. I know that WHS has a backup solution, but I didn't found something up to now which is automated. Perhaps the vendors for external hard drives / NAS provides a software? I also have some experiences with Robocopy and CA ARCserve Backup. But neither of them looks like an ideal solution.

Currently I have 3 TB used and it is growing. I don't want an RAID, I want a real backup which e.g. backups once a week. Do you have some ideas for me?

What have you tried already? Where are you getting stuck? If you're just looking for an opinion-based discussion on options you might want to take, then SU isn't the place to do it. – techie007 Aug 29 '12 at 23:00
Problem: Automated backup, Solution: ? But it seems that I should choose any option. I only wanted to ask for a (professional) solution. So I do something and if I later find out that a solution has major problems which I weren't aware about, this is bad luck ... – testing Aug 30 '12 at 7:46
