download the executable ("Windows Installer") from http://python.org and install.

Get ActivePython for Windows.

See here for installation instructions.

In addition to the installer at python.org, ActivePython includes pywin32 (Windows API extensions) and several unofficial documentation including tutorials to learn Python.

I've always used the Windows installer that is on the download part of the site (found here). I've used it for both Windows XP and Vista and never had a problem.
