Do you know about any affordable client software to upload/retrieve archives from Amazon Glacier? A big plus would be the ability to migrate data from Amazon S3 to Amazon Glacier directly from the cloud connection, to save the data transfer cost.

I'm primarily interested in Mac clients, but I can also use Windows clients via VM.

so far it seem Arq is the best option haystacksoftware.com/arq/index.php – demianturner Nov 29 '12 at 15:05

The FAQ says "If you have a question about … computer software … and it is not about … websites or web services like Facebook, Twitter, and WordPress electronic devices, media players, cell phones or smart phones, except insofar as they interface with your computer, issues specific to corporate IT support and networks, a shopping or buying recommendation." OP asked about client software for Glacier, such as you would use to backup your personal files - which is exactly what I was looking for when I found the question. Which specific item(s) in the FAQ was violated? – T.Rob Dec 3 '12 at 10:45
meta.superuser.com/q/5372/64403 , That being said, This is also exactly what I was looking for. – xelco52 Dec 10 '12 at 21:13
My 2 cents: really stupid to close this question. – philfreo Mar 26 at 18:20
A good choice is CrossFTP, which is an Amazon Glacier and Amazon S3 client for Mac, Win, and Linux. – Gatorhall May 4 at 8:08

As of this writing Amazon does not have its own native way to migrate data from S3 to Glacier. To quote what they recently said on the AWS forum:

S3 integration will be available in the coming months. We will update the forum when we have further details to share about the launch.

However, there are some services that present you a relatively simple interfaces to transfer the data for you. For example https://cloudgates.net and http://sync.cloudberrylab.com Keep in mind that with these services data is traveling through 3rd party's servers. It's up to you to decide if and what kind of privacy/security implications that can have.

For command line solutions there's Perl Multithreaded multipart sync to Amazon AWS Glacier service. If you are looking for GUI, there's Simple Amazon Glacier Uploader

Glacier service have been out for about 2 weeks now, I think it's the best to wait a little bit more as tools get updated/released with native Glacier support.

Amazon Glacier is fairly new, so few clients already exist, and those that do exist are not mature. However, I know about the following:

  1. FastGlacier - Windows GUI tool. Played with it a bit, works ok for me.

  2. Python command-line interface. You may have better luck making it work directly from OSX. Didn't try it.

I suggest you wait a couple of months unless your needs are utterly urgent. Amazon Glacier is a great service for a long-term backup, however there are still some rough edges. For example, client support is sparse, and configuring user security for Glacier is a manual process (e.g. no ready profiles exist).

github.com/LordGaav/glaciercmd is another option – hnns Dec 17 '12 at 17:34
