So take the following:

  1. i7 intel quad core @ 2.3 Ghz with 6 MB L3
  2. i7 intel quad core @ 2.9 Ghz with 3 MB L3

Which would be a better option for Audio processing such as:

  • Recording with Pro Tools with multiple simultaneous recording tracks
  • DJ'ing live
  • MP3 encoding
  • Low latency for FireWire/USB hardware audio interfaces

What other factors should I consider?

EDIT: Please consider everything else equal (RAM, chipset, etc). This wasn't meant to be a shopping question, I know that having more cache in certain situations are better. This is about hardware configuration.

Too localized, is the reason why it's not a good question. You can come ask in Root Access chat. I'll help you out. (Too localized because the answer to this question is entirely specific to which applications you're using and which hardware you're comparing; there's no general answer about cache vs clock rate that's hardware/software-independent.) – somequixotic Sep 18 '12 at 15:49
